Does Medication Change Who You Are?

Someone said something to me recently that touched me deeply and left me feeling a little helpless. It was a young woman who was contemplating a visit to a therapist. She was concerned that the therapist would prescribe something for her, and while she recognized the need for some sort of change in her life, she wasn’t sure that she wanted medication to be a part of it. She was concerned that in trying to “fix” what was wrong with her, she would lose who she was - that the drugs would somehow change her into someone else.

Some time ago, I wrote a post about Ty Pennington, who made the news by getting arrested for DUI. That same month, a national magazine had written an article about Ty, his success, and living with Attention Deficit Disorder. Now Paris Hilton thinks she has ADD.

ADD and ADHD make the news when the news is bad, or sensational, but when people are highly functional, successful adults, Attention Deficit Disorder doesn’t often get mentioned. One of my biggest challenges in my coaching practice is getting my clients on board. Most coaches, ADD or otherwise, work with adults. That means that when someone contacts them for coaching, it is someone who has already made a commitment to change, and who is ready to do so.
