ADD Coaching
Why coaching for Attention Deficit Disorder? And how does it work?Well, first of all, choose coaching because it does work. Studies have shown that the most effective means of treating ADD/ADHD symptoms is with a combination of medication and coaching. Medication is a personal decision, and one I’m not going to address here, but ADD coaching by itself can be effective, too.How does coaching for Attention Deficit Disorder work? Most coaching is done by phone or email, although if you have an ADD coach in your area who is willing to travel, that’s a possibility, too. (ADD Moms is located in Northwest Indiana, just outside Chicago).Coaching is divided into two parts: the coaching call, and check-ins. The coaching call takes place once a week,During the call, we will review the previous week: on the same day and time each week. It lasts about 45 minutes.
- Did you implement the plan we agreed on?
- Did you remember to do it or have trouble with it?
- Did it work? Why or why not?
Next, we’ll look at the coming week:
- Do you have anything coming up that we need to plan for?
- What can we add to last week’s plan to keep you on track?
ADD Coaching is about baby steps, and building on them. Make a small change, turn it into a habit, and then expand and build on it.The other part of ADD coaching is the real magic - the check-ins. People with ADD tend to be forgetful. They have wonderful intentions and plans, and then forget about them. That’s where check-ins come in. Check-ins are short - maybe 5 or 10 minutes - and can be done by phone, email, or IM. They are exactly what they say - a quick check-in to see how you’re doing, did you remember, are you having problems? A gentle reminder to stay on track. The beauty of check-ins (besides their effectiveness) is that they take you, as the parent, out of the nagging zone. That’s the ADD coach’s job now, and it is often received in a much better light than the same reminder coming from you. You would be surprised how much ADD coaching can lessen the tension in the household, and let you and your child reconnect. Isn’t it worth it, for that alone?See my coaching packages and fees here. For questions, or more information about ADD Coaching, email me.
