Both of my daughters have issues with keeping the house (or apartment in their case) clean on a regular basis. And who can blame them? They are my daughters after all.
I was thinking about this the other day and started wondering, “what are we teaching our children when it comes to things that we struggle with as ADD Moms?”.
I had a mom with ADD, and I don’t really remember her teaching me things like cooking and cleaning. Each evening’s dinner was planned around noon that day, followed by a trip to the grocery store.
And my mom cleaned probably the way that you do. She had certain things she did rather often, like vacuum, but if someone was coming to visit, there was that mad rush to get the house really clean.
Her biggest issues were with clutter. Most of it lived in the basement and when it was organized, it lived in boxes piled behind a curtain that ran the length of the room.
I remember helping her clean, but mostly because I would offer. She was one of those people who would rather do it themselves than take the time to teach someone else.
I don’t think I was that way when I was raising my girls, but at the same time, I don’t think I ever really taught them how to clean properly. Maybe cause I didn’t know myself.
The two things that I know they know for sure - my son included - are how to do laundry and the importance of rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. (I like to call him Mr. Dishwasher ).
In our never ending quest to get and keep the house clean, have we overlooked our children?
Don’t we owe it to them to finally figure out how to do simple things properly and then teach them to do the same?
That’s a big task, I know. But don’t you think the effort is worthwhile?
