AS ADDers we’ve all had the experience of feeling as though our brains were cluttered with too much stuff.
But did you know that physical clutter can mess with your brain too?
Living or working in a cluttered environment makes everything harder. It’s harder to clean, to get around and to function. And that goes for your brain too. If part of it is concentrating on working around all the stuff, then it’s not being used for whatever it is that you’re doing.
Clutter can sneak up on you.
We are good about leaving things out and lying around. I guess we intend to put it away later, but for us, later could be a month from now.
Then there’s that thing we have where we leave things out so we won’t lose them. You know how that ends up.
I know that for some of you, clearing out the clutter is an overwhelming job. And if you work in a cluttered work environment, you may or may not be able to do anything about it. I once worked with a woman who was a hoarder at work and at home. Believe me, I know firsthand how hard it can be to work in a place like that.
As with most things, the key to taming the clutter in order to clear your head is to start small and start smart.
That means that you find the place where you spend the most time, or where you need to do productive work.
So if your bedroom is a mess but you only go in there to sleep, you can wait a bit on that.
On the other hand, if it’s the place where you plan your days and pay your bills, then that needs attention ASAP.
Find the place where clutter is having the most negative impact on your life and begin there.
Oh and don’t be afraid to ask for help. We all need help at one time or another. Just be sure that whoever you get to help you will be understanding and work with you. No criticism allowed.
