Fielding a Curve Ball

Sometimes life throws you a curveball - something pops up from left field (are you loving the baseball references here?) and throws your well planned (or not so well planned) life completely out of whack.

I have recently fielded a few curve balls myself, so let me share some tips for handling them.

First, your life has been thrown into a state of upheaval. Take a big breath and accept it. The mess has already been made and is not going away anytime soon. Focus on picking up the pieces and creating the new normal.

Next, get rid of anything that isn’t vitally important to your life. Whittle it down to the basics. Now is not the time to learn Tai Chi or remodel the bathroom. Family, work, and everyday life is about all you have time to handle.

Remember to take care of yourself. You cannot cope with and adjust to this new normal without nourishment and proper sleep.

Do expect your ADHD symptoms to get worse for a while. They can be like two year olds, not liking change or wanting anything to do with it. Therefore, they have a tantrum. Expect it and do what you can to work around it.

Do the best you can to assemble some sort of order and be sure to make sure that your family is coping well too. And don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Finally, remember that this too shall pass. I promise.
