DO Something!

You know, one of the things about Attention Deficit Disorder is that we are easily overwhelmed. I think that leads to being unable to make a decision or to knowing where to start. I also think that most of us try way too hard to be perfect (cause we’re so used to being less than perfect - at least in our eyes). That sort of freezes us up entirely - trying to get everything together, think of everything, be prepared, so that when we do make an attempt, it will be “perfect”.
How’s that working for you so far? I thought so. Me too.
There are lots of reasons that our houses, our offices, our desks and cars and lives look the way they do, but one of them is the inability to take action.
We don’t start because there’s too much to do, or we’re afraid we won’t do it “right” or we don’t know where to begin.
Well, I’m going to tell you where to begin. Begin anywhere. Just begin. Pick the spot you’re in right now and see what you can do without getting up. Set a time limit if you need to; see what you can do it 10 minutes, or 5 or even 1 if that’s all you can face.
Right now, I’ve got some papers that need to be thrown away and a headset that needs to be put away on my desk in front of me. I’ve also got some papers that need to be filed. Not much of a mess, but a mess just the same.
There. In 3 minutes, I cleaned up my desk and had a quick chat with my daughter.
Action of any kind is better than inaction. So what if the kitchen’s a mess and all you cleaned was 2 square feet of counter space? It’s progress. The kitchen is cleaner than it was. Keep building on that, every day, even a few times a day, and you’ll be surprised at what you get done.
Oh, and it doesn’t have to be perfect, either. Think of the worst mess you’ve got. If the imperfect fairy showed up tonight and did an imperfect job of cleaning it up, would you be happy anyway? I bet you would.
So cut yourself some slack, cause deep down inside, you know……. the imperfect fairy is you.
